Het Wielercircus

We believe that cycling is not an individual sport, but a team sport. Both in races and training, you become better, faster, and stronger when you perform as a team. Plus, you have more fun when you ride together!

The Cycling Training
Do you, as a cycling enthusiast, want more challenge than the usual weekly ride? Then Het Wielercircus is for you. You train at your own level under the guidance of a coach. There’s room to train together, whether you’re a beginner or advanced, so you can become better, stronger, and faster.

The Cycling Clinic
Are you a beginner cyclist looking to improve your riding skills? A clinic is a great choice for you. Under the guidance of a coach, you’ll learn various techniques to feel more confident on the bike, allowing you to ride more comfortably and relaxed.

The Cycling Race
Want to experience what it’s like to race at your own level? Try our Starters Race where you’ll learn racing techniques under the guidance of a coach.

Participation

What do you need and how can you join?

For training, clinics, and races, it’s important that you have a properly adjusted road bike and an undamaged helmet. You can sign up using the form below.

For the online training, it’s essential that you have a well-adjusted road bike, roller trainer, bike trainer, or smart trainer, etc. It’s not necessary to have a smart trainer; you can also train using a regular bike trainer or roller. You can sign up using the form below.

The training sessions at The Cycling Circus are a great mix of technical skills and competitive race elements. Each exercise begins with a clear explanation, and you receive helpful instructions while you’re working to improve. In short, awesome!

The training, clinic and race

Cycling Training
Program
From February to June and from September to October, both training sessions and clinics can take place. This is arranged in consultation with the participants or club. The training and clinics for cyclists will only take place with a minimum of 10 participants.

During the autumn and winter months, online training will be held once a week. Due to the intensity of the sessions, these will not last longer than one hour.

Content of (Online) Training Sessions
The (online) training sessions are intense, designed to activate your muscles. The structure of the sessions is tailored to race situations, aiming to replicate various elements that appear in a race. This includes drills like intervals (e.g., 30-30), sprinting, cadence/smoothness, and time trials. Each session will always start with a warm-up and end with a cool-down.

Consistent and disciplined training is essential to build strength—make sure to stick with it.

Content of Clinics
The clinic focuses on gaining more control over your bike. Through various exercises, such as steering technique and cornering skills, we’ll teach the basics of cycling. The goal is for you to feel more relaxed and confident on the bike.

Content of Starters Race
Under the guidance of a coach, you will ride for 35 minutes in a closed peloton at an average speed of around 35 km/h. After 35 minutes, there will be an additional 10 minutes of open racing. You can choose whether or not to participate in the open race portion.

How it works

Cycling Training
Once you have submitted your registration, you will receive a confirmation email. Together, we will assess what you need to improve, get stronger, and ride faster.

Cycling Clinic
Once your registration is submitted, you will receive a confirmation email. The clinic will only take place upon request with a minimum of 10 participants.

Starters’ Course
The races are held on Thursday evenings (starting with daylight savings time). They will begin at 19:00 at the ARC Ulysses track. Once your registration is submitted, you will receive a confirmation email. The participation fee is €4, which can be paid via a QR code before the event.

The level

The Cycling Training is for anyone who wants to become better, stronger, and faster.
Whether you’ve just started cycling or have been riding for some time, you can join the training at Het Wielercircus. The exercises are designed to be adaptable to all levels. If you find an exercise too intense, you can skip it and continue riding at your own pace. This allows you to assess during the session whether the intensity is right for you. We aim to guide you through this process with coaching. During the training, you are not limited by the abilities of others, so differences in levels won’t affect your personal progress. We hope to enhance the enjoyment of cycling together through this approach.

The Cycling Clinic is for anyone who wants to improve their cycling skills.
If you’ve been thinking for a while about getting better at cycling but don’t yet feel confident enough, you can participate in Het Wielercircus clinic. Through exercises, we aim to teach you basic techniques to help you feel more secure on the bike. We hope that this makes cycling feel both fun and safe.

The Starters Race is for anyone who wants to experience what it’s like to race.
If you’ve been cycling for a while and want to take the next step into racing, you can join our Starters Race. In this course, we aim to teach you how it feels to ride in a peloton at speed, with the guidance of a coach. During the race, you’ll receive tips and tricks on things like cornering and maintaining your position in the peloton. We hope this makes racing feel both fun and safe.

The general terms and conditions can be found at the bottom of the page (Dutch). Participation in the training, clinic or race is entirely at your own risk. A training program or clinic will only take place with at least 10 participants.

Coaching

The organization and coaching are provided by Christiaan van Dokkum, an enthusiastic cyclist with experience in leading outdoor and indoor training sessions and clinics. Christiaan also provides training at the club ARC UlyssesKaptein Cycling ClubCycle Capital and helps with the coaching at PowerS training (KNWU) under the guidance of Jos Geijsel (all ages). Furthermore, he is a co-initiator of Ready2Race Visma Lease a Bike. Starting in 2025, Christiaan will be the regional coach for juniors and novices for the KNWU.

In addition, Christiaan will be supported by experienced trainers and coaches, who will assist with the various activities.
